Now that summer is truly here and our “Happy Feet Walkers Club” is off to a great start, the glorious mornings beckon us to the walking trails. As we enjoy the weather, the exercise and companionship, it is essential that we are careful during the walk and avoid the possibility of hurting ourselves. Your knees and hips are particularly vulnerable, given the shocks and impact they withstand along with the intensive workout they get. Improper stride or stance can strain the systems that balance and support the body, resulting in lower back or joint issues.
Here are some cues to follow while walking, in order to avoid problems:
1. Walk erect, with your head and neck aligned with your spine
2. Hold your pelvis stable and do not rock or rotate while walking
3. Keep your arms close to your sides with elbows at right angles, swinging arms from the shoulders
4. Lift your foot straight up, leading with the knee and land on the middle of the foot (not heel or toe) with each step
5. Pay attention to the rhythm and movement of your walk, internalizing the feeling of relaxation and refreshment from the outside air and nature’s bounty
Wish you healthful walking and happy feet!
